Song #2 - Somewhere Somebody Sometime

I love pop music. I love the simple melodies that stick in your head and I love the uncomplicated concepts that force a writer to be economical with every word. Pop songs often deal with universal emotions that can steer towards the cliché, but I believe good pop songs shine a new light on the familiar and let you feel it in a fresh new way.

Somewhere Somebody Sometime is a pop song, and it’s written about a feeling that I think we all have at times when we’re searching for love and belonging — Imagining the life of the person you’re destined to meet, hoping they’re out there thinking of you too. The voice memo of the first verse and chorus has been living on my phone for years, but I just finally decided to finish it. My girlfriend and I have had fun driving around listening to it all week, holding hands while remembering how it felt before we met each other. I’m so happy she likes it.

The production is as sparse as can be, with a nylon string guitar sample being played by keyboard. It’s quantized so that every beat is perfectly on time and it leads to this hypnotic rhythm that I love in modern pop music. It was partially inspired by Every Breath You Take by The Police. Sting is one of my favorite writers and that song is so mesmerizing and always sounds modern. I hope Somewhere Somebody Sometime really blooms into a pop produced gem when I officially record it, but you can hear the bones here already — for now just imagine when the bass, drum beats and piano parts would come in.

I hope you like this one as much as I do, and thank you for all the kind emails and comments on last week’s song — it means a lot.

I’ve been working on three songs for next week. Let’s see if I get them all done before Delta Rae leaves for tour.

Love,
Eric

SOMEWHERE SOMEBODY SOMETIME

Somewhere right now
Somebody’s just getting up
Hitting the snooze on the clock
And getting to work before the boss

Somewhere right now
Somebody’s chasing a dream
Pen held tight in her teeth
As she sketches what we’ve never seen

So with all of these stories combined
Couldn’t somebody’s crash into mine
Be the key on the day we lock eyes
Somewhere somebody sometime

Somewhere right now
Somebody hoping they can
Taking their power in hand
And beginning to hatch another plan

Somewhere right now
Somebody’s saying goodbye
Wiping a tear from her eye
And feeling alone as they cry

So with all of these stories combined
Couldn’t somebody’s crash into mine
Be the key on the day we lock eyes
Somewhere somebody sometime

Where are you now?
And when can I find out?
Where are you now?
I can’t be the only one asking

Somewhere right now
Somebody’s dreaming of you
Imagining all that you do
And hoping you dream of them too

So with all of these stories combined
Couldn’t somebody’s crash into mine
Be the key on the day we lock eyes
Somewhere somebody sometime
Somewhere somebody sometime
Somewhere somebody sometime
