Song #8 - Good Company

I guess I am a country boy at heart. Keeping with the theme of nostalgia, I wrote this one yesterday. I grew up listening to John Denver, James Taylor and Cat Stevens so I’ve always loved the sound of guitar and voice singing a good simple song. I also feel the influence of songs like The Gambler by Kenny Rogers and Danny’s Song by Loggins and Messina in this one. Their cheerful upbeat rhythm makes me feel like everything is ok and we don’t have to worry.

The verses of Good Company are all about the mundane moments of my life where nothing really happened — things just were the way they were and I love them all the more for it in retrospect. Have you ever had morning coffee in a kitchen with your family or gone on a walk with a friend and felt so nourished you didn’t want the moment to end? Some of the best days are not about exciting events or new experiences, they’re just about spending time with good people. I feel this way more and more.

GOOD COMPANY

I had a friend once
And he had a pickup
And we used to look for haunted houses in the summer but never had luck
We’d just drive around and scare ourselves for fun
And we’d probably going to Denny’s when we’re done

Whatever will be will be
Whatever may come we’ll see
It ain’t about where you’re going
When you’re in good company

I had a dog then too
His name was Luke
And there’s a laundry list of things he wouldn’t do
But he’d sleep under the deck out in the back
And he’d come once in a while when I asked

Whatever will be will be
Whatever may come we’ll see
It ain’t about where you’re going
When you’re in good company

A seat at a table
A walk down a street
A million boring places I long to be
As long as we’re able
As long as we’re friends
I don’t mind if it’s fine dining or dead ends

I have a family
You have one as well
And I bet you love and hate them you can’t tell
But we always try to answer when they call
And there’s no such thing as perfect after all

Whatever will be will be
Whatever may come we’ll see
It ain’t about where you’re going
When you’re in good company
