Song #4 - Come Back Home
Hello from the backstage of the Troubadour — my favorite venue in Los Angeles. Delta Rae is taking the stage in an hour but I wanted to send this before we go on.
I love this chorus melody. I wrote it years ago and took it into a writing session with the lead singer of the band Augustana, but we couldn’t pull it together in the afternoon writing session, so the song kind of disappeared for a while. I would often find myself singing the chorus, so I decided to resuscitate it as one of my 100 songs and write a story around it that would circle and evolve the theme of coming home. As with so many story songs this isn’t autobiographical, but it’s easy to imagine these characters in my mind and what it might feel like. Songwriting is imaginative play for me. So much of it feels like writing to a feeling or a circumstance that intrigues me. It’s like writing mini musicals with imagined characters and stories.
I’m back on the road with Delta Rae, and so I recorded these vocals on the bus with my mobile recording studio outside of Laramie, WY after an impromptu camouflage photoshoot. It’s difficult to write while touring. There really isn’t a lot of free time and there is almost no quiet time haha. But I’m excited to try to write a few more in the next few weeks.
As always, please let me know what you think! I so appreciate your feedback and I’ll be coming back to comment on every email and message as soon as I can.
Love,
Eric
Come Back Home
You dream
You leave
You’re on a mission
I wave as you go on your way
I watch
I grieve
I gave permission
‘Cause I don’t know what else to say
But every night that you’re gone
I leave a light on
Don’t you want to come back home
The way’s not dark
The feeling’s still that same old spark
The one we’ve always known
So come back home
I dream
I breathe
I still remember
Every way that you can smile
You call
You breathe
You think it’s better
If we don’t talk for a while
I cry as you say it
‘Cause I know I’ll still wait
Don’t you want to come back home
The way’s not dark
The feeling’s still that same old spark
We’ll miss this afterglow
So come back home
I’m happy for ya
If you’re finding your way
You were right to not stay
I wanted more but
There’s a time to let it go
Let it run let it grow
If you love me you’ll know
And you’ll come back home
The way’s not dark
The feeling’s still that same old spark
We’ve never felt alone
So come back home
